Further Reflections on a Golden “I”
By CATHY HORYN

The new decade certainly didn’t announce itself with a bang on the Globes red carpet last night, and it had nothing to do with the rain. Where was that single, game-changing dress that people would talk about? Not Sandra Bullock’s purple Bottega Veneta. (One Web site called the dress “chintzy.” It wasn’t chintzy, it was just badly designed.) Not Halle Berry in an ill-proportioned cleavage dress that was a mixture of drag queen and pool hustler. (If you want to see finesse with a low-cut gown, recall Gianni Versace’s safety-pin dress on Elizabeth Hurley.) Not pretty Christina Hendricks in Christian Siriano’s exploding ruffle dress. (As one stylist said, “You don’t put a big girl in a big dress. That’s rule number one.”)

Most of the dresses last night offered little more than a paper-doll variation on styles of the past few years. A preponderance of blush pink or one-shouldered styles doesn’t point to a trend so much as reveal an ongoing problem with mediocre design. Maybe the best designers now prefer to stay away from the awards shows, and the actresses, worried about bad publicity, don’t know the difference anymore. They don’t know what it means in fashion to be playful and truly relaxed. So the dresses keep wearing them. I would love to see a relatively new actress wear a short, simple, well-cut, well-proportioned dress with one dramatic detail, be it a neckline or beautiful sleeves. That’s why I thought Ginnifer Goodwin looked terrific in her short blue Vionnet dress with an asymmetrical neckline and, also, Julia Roberts in what was apparently a vintage YSL dress. The dresses weren’t knock-out designs, but the combination of the woman, the style and the moment was. Maybe we’ll start to see 2010 at the Oscars.

Julia Roberts Bought Her Golden Globes Dress at Downtown Boutique

While most of the evening's stars walked the red carpet in long, dramatic loaner gowns, it turns out Julia Roberts bought her dress from a vintage boutique right here in Nolita.

Frock NYC, on Elizabeth Street, is a brilliant source for vintage designer dresses -- right now the store has a vintage red Alaia minidress for $1250 and a scarlet Valentino dress for $1800, along with several other YSL dresses -- and apparenty Roberts was already a regular when she dropped in and spotted the black YSL cocktail dress that she later had her stylist purchase for her to wear to the Golden Globes.

Owner Evan Ross was apparently just sitting at home like everyone else watching the Globes on TV when he realized the store's coup. As he told WWD, "When she walked in, I thought, 'Wait a minute. That's our dress.'"

It's not quite Angelina Jolie's $26 vintage dress, but it's seriously refreshing to hear about a starlet breaking out his or her own wallet to snap up awards show attire -- especially when said cash is going to independent boutiques downtown.

Frock NYC is located at 170 Elizabeth Street

I don't undretsand why some blogs don't like her dress, I loved it.
Julia always knows how to be different from the others, coz she's not like the others. And why she had to wear long dresses as other actreese did? She has those kind of legs that she has to show and she wore those amazing shoes. So all the bad comments about her look are from jealous only.

JULIA'S SULTRY LOOK
For Roberts's gorgeous Golden Globes glow, makeup artist Genevieve played up a dramatic eye and neutral pout using Lancôme products.
How to Do It
1: Apply Bienfait Multi Vital Teinté over face and then Color Design Cream Blush in Petticoat Pink to cheeks.
2: Line eye with Le Crayon Khol in Black Ebony. Apply several coats of Definicils Pro Mascara in Black.
3: Line lips with Le Lipstique Lip Liner in Natural Mauve. Fill in with L'Absolu Rouge in Coquette.
4: Top lip color with Juicy Tubes in Hallucination.
