i was just wondering tho what the scenes were that were cut from the final version. i'm sure they had to reshoot the ending as i read it somewhere around the release of the movie. apparantley the ending involved mary stabbing hyde over and over but was deemed to gory at the time. is this the case or was i dreaming?

i loved this movie too. it's so dark and gloomy. julia did a really good job too, i thought. i wonder why people don't like it. it's another facet to julia. it's her most somber, scariest work to date. i think julia should do more horror films, actually.
iit was adapted from valerie martin's book but i don't know the book's ending. i haven't heard of that ending with stabbing though. the one i always see is very ambiguous.

I always want to know what kind of working relationship Julia had with Stephen Frears, since the movie is considered by lots of people as her lowest career point. During his interview in 2000, Stephen said some really nice things about Julia
Obviously, Cusack wanted to work with you again because of your collaboration on “The Grifters” – which was sort of the transition for him into a mature actor.
Yes – I often get people in transition, I’ve noticed. [laughs] Julia Roberts, to her credit, was trying to do something different when she made “Mary Reilly.” She wanted to try a different path. Good for her. All you can do is admire people’s adventurousness.
She went off and did some “serious” films – some of them not as successful as others – but when she came back to doing “Julia Roberts films,” the romantic comedies that made her famous, it seemed like her acting was informed with a new intelligence. I’m thinking specifically of “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” which has a real dark edge to it.
Well, the intelligence was clearly always there. She’s a very bright woman – and a terrific actress.

he's right
i actually think the opinion on mary reilly has changed dramatically since its release more than a decade ago. someone in awardsdaily forum said she was miscast in mary reilly and then a couple of people said that was the best she has ever been. and these were not fans.

i like this movie. even my parents who are not her fans, liked her performance at that time. i think a lot of adult persons apprciated it.
anyway, thx to Frears about what he said and he's right when he talked about the intelligence thing. she's improved a lot.

Re: mary reilly
I love this movie and Julia is outstanding (I can´t criticize her accent because english isn´t my language). Her performance is brilliant, one of the best of Julia.
Recently the best spanish movie magazine chose Mary Reilly as one of the best adaptations on the subject of Jekyll and Hyde, and lots of critics and moviegoers now consider it as a cult movie. For me it's a great film with some stunning performances.
