"FIREFLIES IN THE GARDEN" Discussion thread

Postby roger the cat on Wed Apr 11, 2007 8:17 am

I thought to open a thread all about Julia's new movie Fireflies in the Garden. :D

THE PLOT:

Michael Waechter(32) is flying home for his mother's college graduation. His mother, Lisa Waechter(50), has spent a lifetime stroking her husband's massively insecure ego. reassuring Professor Charles Waechter(53) that he is indeed the genius he thinks he is. Now that the children have grown and left the house, she has gone back to college to finally attain her degree. Today is Lisa's day. What should be a moment of great celebration, however becomes a targic family reunion as Lisa is killed in a car accident on route to her graduation, leaving Charles, Michael and Michael's precocious sister, Susan(21), to pick up the pieces.

The death of his mother also reunites Michael with Jane(36) who is more like a cousin than an aunt. The coming together unlocks a Pandora's Box of secrets, from a summer spent as teenagers. Always hiding in the shadows, Michael must finally stand up to Charles, who blames his family as the reason why he never attained great fame and respect as an academic. most of all, Michael struggles with his own inner demons-painful childhood memories of his father abusing his mother physically, abusing him psychologically, and the jealousy he feels towards Susan, who wants nothing more than to please her father in order to broker the peace.

Can true closure, whatever that means, indeed ever be achieved? Or rather is one step towards reconciliation, no matter how "small," good enough, at least for now.

I work at Cellular One in Bastrop and they were filming today. I saw one of the crew trucks pass the front of the store with a bunch of the crew and cast including Julia on the back. They have been there for several days from what I heard. One of my customers met Julia and Willam yesterday.

Is Shannon Lucio in the cast? I like her :) ! I've seen her in O.C. second season! She was Lindsay, Caleb's illegitimate child!

it may have some chances in the acting categories considering the strong cast (julia, watson, dafoe) but i don't think it will have any oscar campaign or support since it's produced bty a small studio. but every year there's an indie which get oscar attention (little miss sunshine, in the badroom...) so one can never tell...i hope julia's role is interesting and deep enough to get critic attention.

Fireflies' alighting all over Europe

Just 48 hours after wrapping principal photography, the Julia Roberts' starrer "Fireflies in the Garden" has virtually sold out in Europe.

Essential Entertainment signed all rights deals for "Fireflies" in Cannes with Italy's Medusa, Manga in Spain, RCV in Benelux and Nordisk for all of Scandinavia. The Senator International production also locked up several smaller territories, including South Africa for Nu Metro.

"I was in Austin (Texas) on Friday for the last day's shoot, flew to Berlin (Senator's headquarters), then came to Cannes on Saturday," "Fireflies" producer and Senator International head Marco Weber said.

Directed by Dennis Lee and featuring a cast that includes Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson and Carrie-Anne Moss, "Fireflies" is the first production by Senator International since German parent company Senator Entertainment emerged from insolvency proceedings.

"This film really sets our blueprint for the kind of productions we want to do," Weber said. "We want to be about quality, not quantity."

Senator International is in preproduction on the Bret Easton Ellis adaptation "The Informers," which Gregor Jordan ("Buffalo Soldier") will direct.

English-language productions are the final piece in Senator's rapid post-bankruptcy expansion. Last year, Senator was one of the most active German buyers in Cannes, snatching up such titles as "Son of Rambow," "Pan's Labyrinth" and "Fast Food Nation."

The company has also been bolstering its German production slate. On Sunday, Senator announced it had signed a deal with German art house director Andreas Dresen ("Summer in Berlin") for his next two projects.

Senator has acquired German theatrical rights to Dresen's "Wolke Neun" (Cloud Nine), which reteams the director with "Summer in Berlin" producer Peter Rommel. The story of a woman who begins an affair after 30 years of marriage is set to begin shooting this summer.

After wrapping "Wolke Neun," Dresen will shoot the tragicomedy "Whisky Mit Wodka" (Whiskey With Vodka) as a co-production between Senator Film and Rommel's Peter Rommel productions. "Summer in Berlin" screenwriter Wolfgang Kohlhaase will also pen "Whiskey."

Senator plans to release both films in Germany next year.

can anyone fill me in on this project?

this is Julia playing a 50-year-old? who gets killed straight away? why does she star in such films? and who is the director, anyway? this is not going to help her get a bigger profile again.

plus, it will be one of those films no-one wants to see unless it is really amazing. and why would it be amazing? I hope it s not one of those indie pics by a first-time helmer that famous actors choose to get some cred and they end up looking miserable throughout the film and think that s great acting

ok. so I read throught the respective thread. It sounds all WRONG.
I wonder if she only agreed to it because Danny was in it first?

there are so many reasons why this could go terribly wrong, and only so few why it could be okay.

-first-time director - they are always terribly ambitious and overload their scripts with psycho philosophical b.s.

-Ryan Reynold- I didnt know he was taken seriously as an actor. last time i checked he was a vampire in Blade

-German production company. Yes, they only give the money, but German production companies invested in so many weird films in the past, it is like a running gag in Hollywood now. if you want to find money for your most stupid project, go to Germany, there ll be some idiot for you.

- the story. sounds like an indie-film cliché and it like it was filmed by Barbara Streisand as "Prince of Tides" 20 years ago.

you heard it here first. its bound to be a major flop. I so hope I am wrong though.

who feels the same?
